Shortcrusts 2

There we go. Finished. In the bag. Bosh. Like crap out of a goose. Shortcrusts 2 is finished. This story is a bit different to my usual in terms of drawing style and absence of dialogue. Ooh and there's a little bit of sauce. Hope Rob's ok with it.

Not sure if there's a shortcrusts 3 in me though, I'll have to see if I get any brainwaves. Maybe another oversized pasty night will spark the imagination...

First one done

Okaaay, finished digesting. Spent some of this weekend doing my first of 3 stories for Rob Jacksons Pasties anthology. Here's a couple of sample frames. I was concerned I've done Thomas Wogan to death, oh yeah I guess I already have, titter, but I couldn't resist. The next two stories, also under the title 'Shortcrusts' will be very different from each other.

In the line of duty...

I feel research is very important when undertaking any project. That is how pasty night came about. Not only did it spark a few ideas it was rather pleasant evening of grub and homebrew. I opted for the cheese, potato and onion and my colleague, Dr Thomas, went for a rice and lentil filling with wholemeal pastry. Bloody hippy. Eagle eyed observers will notice a variety of sealing techniques: the Birketts style side crimp and the classic cornish style top crimp. I was so full at the end of it I could barely walk home, I'm never eating pastry again.

I think next year pasty night will be a possible rival to the UK Webcomix thing. So er, look out!

Recommended

It's not exactly news but I can heartily recommend the banal pig series of comics by Steve Tillotson. Top artwork, top gags, top characters. Particular favourites are feeder and wife (a few guilty guffaws there), hairy feller and fez man.

I think the best place to start would be the collected banal pig issues 1-3. It's a whopping 78 pages so it's something you can get your teeth into.

Covered up

Accent uk liked the submission but asked me to cover up my cricket man (see post below). It's understandable as all kinds of people read the anthologies. This may not be the finished article but I think I'll go for this level of coverage, I suppose some things are best left to the imagination eh?...

Finished!

Finished my accentuk Victoriana submission in good time. I still need to mess about with it in photoshop but I'm chuffed to have done the hard bit. Here's a sneak peek, there'll be no more until it (hopefully) appears in the anthology. The character is Lord Whitethroat, a victorian adventurer and naturalist. And naturist by the looks of it too. In this image I tried to convey a mad look in the eye (making the batsman question whether he was just going to wang the ball at his head), a leg spinners googly handgrip, and the bouncing appendage.

More stuff, but no drawings

It's worthwhile swinging by Rob Jacksons website as a matter of regularity, his work on the pasty anthology is continuing apace with a great planet of the apes painting, erm with a twist. Still no new drawings from me yet but there will be soon.

Count Arthur Strong was great on Friday: Nicholas Parsons and his two big balls of Edam, Wilf Taylors quality meats and Malcolm pretending to be Barry Cryer. A veritable tour de france!
